Q: “You mentioned that you had sort of taken over for Trummy Young – that it was supposed to be his gig. He must have been a big influence on you originally…”
A: “He was my idol. Trummy Young was my idol. That's the only reason I accepted that because I heard a lot of the trombone players like Miff Mole and J. C. Higginbotham and Kid Ory and all these guys, Teagarden. But I feel that if Teagarden have or had a chance to just explore his instrument a little bit more, he would have been way out there, too. You see, he became famous more as a vocal.”
