Q: “What was the first jazz that you remember hearing and impressing you?”

A: “Oh, well, you see, I was from a small town, Pottstown, and Louie Armstrong and he comes to with his big band and I would go in the alley and catch him where he would be hearing me coming through, I'd be chased away and everything at Sunnybrook and then Count Basie and I never realized that I would one day be playing with these guys and everything.”
