Q: “It was the Dankworth band that got you exposed on a wider scale because just when you joined the band didn’t the Dankworth Orchestra come to Newport?”
A: “That's right, I joined just before the band went to Newport. Yeah, it had a conventional brass section, but instead of saxophones, they had this, what they call the “seven” because they originally started out with a seven-piece band, which was four horns and a rhythm section, trumpet, trombone, two saxophones. And he kept that in the big band instead of a sax section. There was, at least, four trumpets and four trombones added here. It was quite a big band.”
