Q: “It is necessary to have influences; I mean somebody’s got to show you the way. How do you get past them? How do you realize that what you’re doing is your way of doing it?”
A: Urbie Green: “Oh, I don't know. I guess I just keep thinking about it. You know, that's a hard question to answer, really. It seems like some people had it from the beginning, though, that didn't have to go through that.”
Interviewer: “Without whom?”
Urbie Green: “Well, I think of Miles Davis, for instance. I never heard him sound like anybody and also he must have been very young when he was first ... when everybody became aware of him, you know, he's like twenty or even younger maybe, I don't know.”
Interviewer: “Yeah.”
Urbie Green: “So where did he ... I never had a chance to talk to him about it, but where did he come out of?”
