Q: “Did you think your music would be as enduring as it has become, and is the fact that it is so enduring and so much of it to be considered to be classical jazz performances influence you at all in your decision to come back again?”
A: “No, because, you see, I have never thought in terms of the marketplace. It's just that this is my particular type of temperament. People ask me, "How many records or what do you think, do you think this will sell?" I'm not selling records. I make records. I'm at the position of an artist who makes a painting. He hopes people will buy it. I do courses called “Three chords for beauty's sake and one to pay the rent.”
